About me
Before becoming Director of the National Association for the Teaching of English (NATE), I was Head of Department at an 11–18 school in North Yorkshire. Several years ago, I began blogging regularly, focusing on education, writing, and the transformative power of language. My goal has always been to share valuable resources and foster an exchange of ideas with fellow educators. I am deeply committed to the potential of a thoughtfully designed curriculum—one that not only imparts knowledge but also nurtures essential skills and inspires a lifelong appreciation for language and literature.
In my current role with NATE, I lead efforts to support English teachers nationwide, championing innovative practices and promoting professional development. Throughout my career, I have engaged with diverse audiences and contributed to various professional platforms. Highlights include leading workshops at the 2019 NATE conference, at the 2022 Government Events’ Teaching English in Schools Conference, and collaborating on development projects with Myatt & Co in 2023. My writing has been featured in educational publications such as Teach Secondary and NATE’s Teaching English.
Beyond my work with NATE, I have enjoyed guiding individuals seeking to enhance their writing across formats—from essays and fiction to content and copywriting. As my expertise has grown, I’ve supported friends and colleagues in showcasing their work and growing their businesses through effective written communication. This led to the creation of the Tastes Like Fresh Copy project, designed to help education, heritage and culture organisations with high-quality written content.
